Pamela S. Klein, 49, (Class of 1973) public relations executive and former business editor of The Indianapolis Star, died March 5, 2005, of complications from cancer.

She worked 20 years for several newspapers and was hired by The Star in 1992, rising quickly to become its assistant managing editor for business coverage. She left the paper in 1997 to work for Hetrick Communications, the city's largest public relations firm, founded by her husband, Bruce K. Hetrick. Klein was the firm's vice president and chief operating officer.

Even as a child that she knew she wanted to be a reporter. Growing up in Fraser, MI, she often hid under the covers with a flashlight so she could read when she was supposed to be sleeping, her husband said. Unlike most other children, however, she wasn't sneaking peaks at comic books -- she was reading the newspaper.

That love took her to Central Michigan University, where she studied journalism and worked on the college newspaper before graduating in 1977. The faculty adviser to the Central Michigan Life praised her energy and positive attitude.

"Every newspaper, every staff has a cheerleader. She was the spark plug, the motivator, the person who got people excited," said associate journalism professor Jim Wojcik.

Described as a quiet leader who preferred for others to be in the spotlight, Klein inspired myriad reporters, who sought her counsel years after they worked together.

Klein worked for newspapers in Michigan and Massachusetts and, eventually, Connecticut. There, while at The Hartford Courant, she worked as a business reporter and wrote a column on marketing.

While doing a story on a local ad agency, she met Hetrick, who worked there. Their marriage in 1991 would change her life in many ways. Hetrick was divorced; he and his ex- wife had twin sons. When his ex-wife moved to Fort Wayne, Hetrick said, he soon wore himself out making regular trips to see them.

"Pam said, 'I think we need to move closer to the boys,' " Hetrick recalled Saturday. They checked out several Midwestern cities and settled on Indianapolis, intending to move as soon as they could find jobs. The final omen, her husband said, came during a day at the races. They bet $2 on a horse called "Give Notice" -- a long shot that came from behind to win.

Klein was hired as a reporter on the Star's state desk in 1992, with Waller's strong recommendation. Walller called The Star's managing editor, Frank Caperton, and told him, "You would be nuts not to hire her." Caperton did, and within a year, Klein was running The Star's business desk.

"Pam took over the business desk with some major improvements in mind and did an outstanding job in executing them," recalled Malcolm Applegate, former general manager for Indianapolis Newspapers, which at the time published The Star and an afternoon paper, The Indianapolis News. "She was an excellent leader."

Klein also did freelance writing for other publications, including the Chicago Tribune, Newsweek and Indianapolis Monthly magazine. Her work had won many awards, and she twice was a finalist for Northwestern University's Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.

Survivors include her husband; stepsons Austin T. and Zachary A. Hetrick; parents Ken and Jean Klein; sisters Carrie L. and Denise A. Klein.
