The New Scrapbook of

Image I started doing magic in the 50's out of a desire to be accepted in my new home town school in Fraser, Michigan by buying a deck of magic cards at Webb Drug Store. I did a few card tricks in third grade and it went well. I continued doing small shows for family and friends during this time throughout my elementary school years up to High School and into my adult years as a semi-professional performer. During all this time I've used the name "Mandara the Magician" most my life but have now decided to change it. So after a discussion with a very attractive fire eater named Sophie Evans about my name change, I will now be going under the name "Magic Bob". It's friendly and suits my comic magic show I have been doing for almost over 40 years. Recently I was living in Las Vegas, formerly working at the Flamingo Hotel/Casino for a comic-magician to whom I sold his first magic props back in 1972 and he took my magic classes and now he is a Vegas entertainer and what was I doing, I was setting up his props and being stage manager. I decided I wanted to do my own thing and after I quit his show I started doing magic around the different casinos working for Houdini Magic Company. After over a year in Vegas I decided to head back to Michigan and re-establish my act here again.

Magic Bob is now here.

Magic Bob is the name, fun is the game!

Hey, it could happen someday!

A little history of Magic Bob.

"In the beginning was magic......"

Photos of my early business cards from the 60's for myself and for a two man show with my friend Paul billing us as the Mandaras. The other photo is of the sword cabinet I made in high school, I'm holding the swords and Paul is in the box.

My earliest professional performance pictures, taken at the Fraser Lion's father and son banquet in the late 60's. I built the guillotine shown below, it worked most the time.

My earliest publicity photos from the 60's

An early recognition for my performances

Two pictures from my travels in 1969 with the U.S. Army Special Services, performing in Germany during the Vietnam era. The picture on the right was taken in a underground ammo bunker built by Hitler's troops.

Publicity photos from the early 70's

A few pictures taken at a Halloween lounge Party in the La Kav room in the Balenger Supper Club in Warren, Michigan. Notice the newer, bigger and improved guillotine I built. Also my beard is back from my pre-military days and my hairline is receding more.

I was recommended by the Detroit News Contact 10 to perform for the Plumbrook Homeowner Association.

The opening of my magic shop "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", 1972.

Picture of me hard at work entertaining the customers.

Myself and a few local magicians sponsored a Halloween show as an alternative to the unsafe trick or treating that was occurring back then. Below are a few pictures of myself performing at that show.

Performing a new variation on the Zombie Ball.

My second guillotine.

This was my second Sword Cabinet that I built and then later sold to a young magician named Johnathan who later became the Amazing Johnathan, now performing his weird brand of comedy magic in Las Vegas.

A few pictures and part of the program from the ALSAC Inspirational Ball held in Detroit and featuring impressionist Jim Bailey.

The top picture shows the third Sword Cabinet I built and the next two are of the Jig-Saw lady. And my hairline is going still north.

I did a Halloween show in 1975 at the Jewel Theatre in Mt. Clemens, MI. Shortly after that the theatre became an adult XXX movie house.

A few pictures from a magic convention competition I entered during "Michigan Magic Day" in Saginaw, Michigan in 1976. The rabbit I built is mechanical and was controlled by a friend offstage, we did a comedy bit and the big coffin shaped thing was my own original design and built by me called "The Jig-Saw Woman". I heard after the show that my act was well received by the judges but I lost to someone who pulled cards out of the air, snore.

The next picture is what the illusion would have looked like later, but my friend Ron Koch who was taking the pictures said he was so amazed by what happened he forgot to take the picture, so I did a bit of special effects with cut and paste to show you what the effect would have looked like towards the end of the effect in the picture below.

A couple newer publicity photos for the late 70's

A newer business card and flyer from the late 70's

Every Monday night I produced, hosted and performed in a mock "Gong Show" at the Carousel Restaurant In Clinton Twp., Michigan. The pictures below are of me performing a bit between each act in the show.

I was quite thrilled when I was asked to perform at Gino's Surf Supper Club in Mt. Clemens. It was like the Las Vegas of Michigan.

ABOVE: The ad they placed in the Detroit News.

ABOVE: A review written by the now late Chuck Thurston from the Detroit Free Press.

ABOVE: My publicity ad I made and put out all over town.

Every Tuesday night I produced, hosted and performed on a special night of magic I called the "Cabaret of Magic" at Power's Place Restaurant and Golf Club in Roseville, Michigan. It featured many local magicians performing both close up and stage magic and it was a fun place to be. Unfortunately, Roseville was a not very progressive town and the local authorities closed us down because the restaurant had no entertainment license. They didn't like giving out entertainment licenses because they were afraid of topless bars moving in. That never made sense to me as they could have specified exactly what type of entertainment could be permitted with the license. Dumb!

Below is a brief list I would include in my publicity info of shows I worked for the years listed.

I will add more here later for the late 70's.

Jumping ahead a few years to the early 80's, I moved my family to northern Michigan and did a few shows, but the town was so small a few shows was enough to be seen by everyone.
