November 21, 2004 update - A work in progress...
Pictures for this story are below.
September 3rd became the day to leave Las Vegas. My son and I had packed evrything in
the van unfortunately we couldn't get everything in so I had to leave a number of minor
items in the apartment. I didn't like this but not much could be done, every square
inch of the van was packed. I went to the office of Houdini's and got my final pay
check and then we ran by the cable company to turn in the cable box and cancel the
service, then hit out on U.S. 15 toward Arizona. We were finally on the freeway but
it was windy across the desert making the overloaded van sway back and forth. It was
a bit scary. About 35 miles out of Vegas there were a number of vehicles honking at me,
I thought they were annoyed that I was going so much slower than they until I heard a
strange noise. It was a small rumbling so I pulled over and we discovered that the
right rear tire was leaking air. People were honking because the tire was so low, I
guess. We pulled the jack and spare tire out and tried to change the thing but every
stinking time a semi truck would whiz by, the van would shake so bad and knock the jack
over. We spent a horrible hour and a half trying to change a tire, busting one hydralic
jack and no one would stop to help. We now had no jack because it was destroyed under
the van when it was crushed by a sideways shake, thanks to truckers who wouldn't move
over away from the broke down van. Finally one pick up truck pulled over and the driver
had a good jack and we scrambled to change the tire. My thanks to that unknown driver,
we were back on the road.
We headed on toward Arizona and after a while started down a long curve of road, traffic
started to slow and back up. There was a police car ahead and heavy smoke nearby, and when
we got closer, it was a car, suburban truck whatever, that had ran off the road and was
ablaze (see pictures below). We headed on toward the border of Arizona.
